Actor website vs. social media: why you need both.

By the ActorSite Editorial Desk · 6 minute read ·

Social media is for fans. Your website is where you get hired. The two serve completely different audiences with completely different expectations — and both are essential to a working actor's digital strategy.

What social media does well

Instagram, TikTok, and X build public-facing personality. They show your range, your humor, your daily work. Fans, collaborators, and a general audience discover you through social. That audience is real and valuable — but it is not how you get booked.

What a website does that social media cannot

Your website accommodates your work in its intended format. A 1080p reel plays without compression. Your résumé renders as a printable PDF. Your headshots display at full resolution. A casting director or agent looking to submit you needs professional materials — and social media was never built for that.

You don't own your social following

A platform can change its algorithm, restrict reach, or remove your account overnight. Your website is yours — fully owned, fully controlled, and not subject to the whims of a platform's product roadmap. It is the only piece of your digital presence that cannot be taken away.

The strategy: let each tool do its job

Use social media to be discoverable and interesting. Use your website to be bookable. Link your website in every bio, every email, every submission. The goal is to bring industry attention from social channels to a professional home base where the actual business happens.
